Last week, the homestead had a small group of eager visitors. A local pre-school field trip was led by the Dragonfly students who live at the homestead. Fourteen kids were lead across the farm to learn about all that students do at the homestead.
The homestead team separated into different stations and awaited their visitors. A short wagon ride to the chicken coop gave the kids something to entertain their wild, young minds. They’re excitement was obvious as they stroked chickens and looked for eggs. A Q&A session gave the homesteaders a chance to share all that they’ve learned on the farm. Next, the kids were led to the goats. Kids fed them sweet feed as they’re numerous questions were answered by Mentors and the Homesteaders running the goat station.
From the goats, the kids moved on to the horse and donkey station. The horse and donkey received more treats than they could handle, with most every child in the class hand-feeding them. After the horse and donkey station, the kids were lead to the garden behind the greenhouse, to help the Dragonfly students dig up potatoes and pick tomatoes. A group photo was taken of the children with their pickings. Pineapples, Rainbow Chard, and Kale, Oh my!
The second to last stop was the greenhouse itself. There they were lead around and shown all the various vegetables that grow there. Finally, the kids were lead to the apple tree’s behind the homestead. A place that every homesteader goes to get themselves a fresh apple. Parents held their kids up to pick apples and put them into a Cider press, that shortly afterwards squeezed out some delicious, fresh apple cider. The kids settled down for snack time on the sunlit back porch and celebrated a one of the kids’ birthday. Dragonfly’s Matt Schoch, or “Farmer Matt”, as he’s usually called, treated the kids to a song he wrote himself about the farm. The Homestead thanked the children for all their help on the farm, and the children all went on their way, back to school.
