Nate Benham
Nate took a long and adventurous route in finding his way to Klamath Falls. Born and raised in Minnesota, Nate is no stranger to cold temperatures and consistently disappointing sports teams. Nate’s passion for the outdoors and relationship building was sparked in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, where he led canoeing and hiking expeditions with teens and young adults. Through these experiences, Nate honed his ability to craft metaphors that connected the expedition to the student’s daily lives. That spark grew into a fire that propelled Nate on a 10+ year outdoor-guiding journey during which he slept countless nights under the stars, grew to appreciate a well-stocked camping spice kit, learned exactly how long a rain jacket can last, collected thousands of “dad jokes”, and –most importantly– enhanced his rapport-building and therapeutic skills. During this time, Nate led expeditions in many breathtaking environments. Nate is grateful for his time as a Mentor and Assistant Field Director at a wilderness therapy program because it truly was a master class for his therapeutic and experiential skills development.
Using an authentic and genuine relationship-focused approach to therapy, Nate utilizes Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Experiential Therapy to assist the students in finding balance, consistency, and empowerment. Nate uses in-the-moment teaching to provide the students with challenges and growth opportunities.
Nate can often be found daydreaming about skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, ultimate frisbee, and disc golf.
