Our History And Philosophy
Dragonfly Founders’ Vision and Philosophy
Mona Treadway and Glenn White, Dragonfly founders, have over 40 years of combined experience
working with adolescents and adults in the outdoors and other therapeutic settings, including those
who struggle with depression, substance abuse, emotional or physical abuse, mood disorders,
personality disorders, trauma, identity issues, grief, and loss. After witnessing the positive
changes participants experienced through the enhanced self-worth, increased communication skills,
and fitness achieved through wilderness experiences; Glenn and Mona were determined to bring these
life-enriching experiences to a wider circle of people.
In June 2000, Mona and Glenn founded Dragonfly Adventures based on a belief that the outdoors is
an effective vehicle for growth, awareness, self-discovery and change. At Dragonfly, we believe the
wilderness should be used to enhance people’s lives and relationships, not punish them. We
strive to provide an environment of respect, compassion, support and challenge where young people
and their families can discover their strengths, develop their talents and move towards a
successful future.
While guiding therapeutic adventures, we found that a number of young adults participating in
the Dragonfly Adventures program needed a safe, supportive environment in which to continue their
personal growth and transition to independence. In June 2002 Dragonfly expanded to include
Dragonfly Transitions, a 9-12 month independent living, and personal development experience for
young adults. Transitions is for young adults struggling with maturation or motivational
challenges, often coupled with substance abuse recovery, providing a fresh start in a small,
manageable environment affords them an opportunity to try on new perspectives, attitudes, and
behaviors as they mature and move towards healthy independence.
In August of 2008 Dragonfly Adventures ran their last 21-day therapeutic trip and officially
closed. Mona and Glenn felt the Transitions program needed their undivided attention. Dragonfly
TRANSITIONS continues to utilize the outdoors and provides many recreational opportunities for the
students.
